The holiday season, and winter in general, routinely takes its toll on many people. Yes, some due to over-indulging, but also because the body steps out of its normal busyness of work schedules and starts saying, 'Heh, I want to take a rest now, please!' Perhaps the person keeps going with family get-togethers and friend meet ups, leading to a depleted system. For others it can be the total opposite – they may be moving around even less, perhaps sitting or lying down for long periods. And for some their immunity is routinely compromised, or they have caught any number of seasonal bugs.
Whatever the reason, when the lymphatic system starts to back up we feel sluggish, with common symptoms such as a sense of heaviness, fatigue, brain fog, aches and pains, puffy eyes, sinus issues – and much more.
The lymphatic system is a complicated system.

To give a very short summary:
- The lymph system is a network of organs, vessels and tissues – with every part necessary to its function
- When it's working correctly it collects excess fluid from your body’s tissues and returns it to your bloodstream
- It filters out waste products and abnormal cells from this fluid
- It helps your body absorb fats
- It is a large, vital part of your immune system
What's important to know is that the lymph system has no 'pump' (unlike the cardiovascular system that has the heart as its pump). The lymph system relies on a combination of breathing, muscle contractions, valve movements and arterial pulsations to circulate around the body and approximately 75% of the lymph drains to the left side.
I am a professionally trained Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) practitioner and on the RLD register, having added this important therapy to my practice after training with Sally Kay who developed Reflexology Lymph Drainage through extensive clinical practice. When you come for a Reflexology Lymph Drainage session I stimulate a sequence of foot reflexes on both your feet that correspond to the lymph system. This helps the lymph move, flush, drain and replenish. For some clients there is a noticeable betterment soon after the treatment, and in general clients report many benefits, including more energy, less swelling, reduced inflammation, better sleep and more.
Clients who have all their lymph nodes and no compromised areas of their lymph system might find that a few sessions were all they needed to help re-set themselves, and then to follow some easy healthy living protocols to continue aiding their health.
Clients who have had lymph nodes removed, or parts of the lymph system are compromised, will generally need to maintain a lymph drainage protocol of some kind as an ongoing practice – this is because as mentioned earlier: the lymph system has no pump of its own, so if it's severely compromised ie missing lymph nodes – it is likely to always need support to drain efficiently. Most of my clients with compromised lymph systems go ahead with a mix of protocols; Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD), plus MLD (manual lymph drainage via a nurse or at-home techniques), plus incorporating some healthy living practises into their every day life also.
When you have a session with me I will generally also recommend some reflex points you can stimulate on your hands to help you inbetween sessions. These are not a replacement for a full professional Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) treatment of course, but it's good for clients to know some 'at-home' tips they can do themselves too.
