October comes, and for many of us time does not slow down to allot us our reveries, our to-do list continues at pace. And like the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland there are hurried cries of, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" – just as the hurried words written in the original 1865 book by Lewis Carroll.
Meanwhile nature is humming to its rhythms; the leaves fall from trees alighting the pathways with russet and amber colours, robins, wrens and finches sing along with visitors such as jays and redwings and many insects prepare to enter their winter dormancy. And of course sunrise is later, and sunset earlier. With the clock of natural time so evidently following its seasonal shift doesn't it make sense for us to wind down too?
When busyness is constant the cortisol is high, disturbing our metabolism, immune function, mood and sleep. When we are blinker focused on tasks 24/7 we forget to see the gifts of life. And like the White Rabbit we rush, dis-engaged from connection or community, dis-engaged from ourselves – actually doing ourselves a dis-service as the stress levels frazzle us and make us less equipped, not more.
It is wonderful to be absorbed by projects that you enjoy, but ensure that you nurture yourself. Make time to slow down. Put spaces in your calendar for fun, for socialising, for self care, for connecting with nature – even one date with yourself a week will help to restore you.
Be less White Rabbit. Be more Caterpillar.
