For this blog post I am going to write about the joy of socks! At first glance that could seem inane, silly, pointless – and even if it is, that's okay! But simply, this morning for the first time in a long time I thought, Hmm, my feet are a bit cold and I put on a pair of socks. And oh, that cosy feeling, the aspirational hygge, the simple pleasure of an easy Sunday morning (cue the music !)
There are so many simple pleasures in life, and we have modern terms for them: glimmers, small wins. However we name them the important thing is to feel them, and truly allow that moment, for however short it is, to enter us and resonate. In my last blog post I talked about the power of pause; and here in this one the importance of that message comes up again. Let us slow down enough to appreciate.
When I was younger I used to just give myself half an hour from getting out of bed in the morning to leaving the house for my job at the time. That seems like madness to me now, but it worked for me then. Now, however, I give myself two hours. Two hours so I can go slow, gather myself, inhale the lavender water as I wash my face, look at the tree outside and listen to the birds and the squirrels as I get dressed, feel my ginger tea reinvigorate me and then later take time with my coffee, savouring every sip.
Whatever our routines and rituals let us allow the simple pleasures of life, and feel their genuine worth. I shall leave you with this apt work by Rumi below – but before you read it can I ask, 'As we've had these cooler mornings, have you been enjoying a pair of socks too?'

From an untitled quatrain by Rumi
(1207-1273)
Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
from The Essential Rumi, translations by Coleman Barks with John Moyne, 1995.
